Project Details
Known as “The American Louvre,” The Renwick Gallery is a National Historic Landmark built in the 19th Century. It has been a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum since the early 1970s. The building was slightly damaged during the 2011 Washington D.C. earthquake, and the construction process required reworking of the original infrastructure. The renovation expanded to include a complete replacement of the HVAC and plumbing systems. The installed HVAC equipment consisted of 1 chiller, 3 air handling units, 3 fan coil units, 38 VAV units, 1 cooling tower, and more. The plumbing equipment and fixtures consisted of 11 water closets, 3 urinals, 11 lavatories, 3 emergency eye wash stations, and 1 domestic water heater. The 34,000 square foot museum was closed to the public during the renovation. Due to the location near the White House, Blair House, New and Old Executive Office Buildings, the renovation was challenging because of the traffic and security concerns.
